100th successful kidney transplant done in Odisha’s SCB

In a milestone SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack has successfully conducted its 100th kidney transplant surgery, on Wednesday.

Tarun Swain, a patient from Jagatsinghpur was given a new kidney in a three-hour-long surgery by a  team of doctors led by the head of the renal transplant unit, Datteswar Hota, yesterday.

The first kidney transplant surgery was conducted at SCB on March 19, 2012.

Hota said his unit is this is the only government set-up in the whole of eastern India to have achieved such a record in renal transplant. They were going to start robot-assisted kidney transplant surgery by the end of this year to improve the success rate of surgeries. We have set a target to conduct another 100 transplant in the next two years, he added.

The mortality rate among transplant patients stood at 14 per cent as 14 kidney recipients have died. However, not a single donor death has been reported so far.

The survival rate of kidney transplant patient for one year after surgery in SCB medical college is 80 per cent which is higher than the international rate of 60 per cent to 65 per cent.
