2 fake Maoists demand Rs 5 lakh from Koraput businessman, arrested

Koraput: Two fake Maoists were arrested today for allegedly demanding Rs 5 lakh from a businessman belonging to Podagada locality under Dasamantapur block of Koraput, DSP Utkal Ranjan Dash informed in a presser.

The accused were identified as Prashant Khosla of Runjaguda and Aman Mahanandia of Bijaghati in the district.

According to DSP Dash, the victim businessman named Ashwini Patra earlier lodged an FIR with Sadar police on July 27 stating that the accused duo had written a letter demanding Rs 5 lakh. They had warned Patra that the latter would be beheaded in a Praja Court, in case he will fail to pay the demanded money.

Acting on the FIR, a team comprising Koraput town SDPO, Cyber Cell personnel and Sadar police launched a probe leading to arrest of the accused fake Maoists.

After the businessman Patra expressed his inability to pay Rs 5 lakh, by making a phone call to the victim, the accused duo asked him to pay Rs 50,000. They also insisted Patra to bring three rain coats and come to Koraput bus stand along with the money.

The fake Maoists, however, got tipped-off about presence of police at the bus stand and managed to flee from the spot in a car. The police team chased and intercepted the vehicle at INTEC Square, when the accused were on their way to Damanjodi, Koraput DSP Dash stated.

Sadar police have registered a case and launched a detailed probe, which is underway.

Police have seized cash of Rs 49,000, two mobile phones and three rain coats from the possession of the fake Maoists, including the car used in the crime. As driver of the car did not have a valid Driving License, police have registered another case in this connection against him.
