2 from Odisha arrested for kidnapping, killing businessman in Surat

Bhubaneswar: The Gujarat police have arrested two persons from Odisha’s Ganjam district for allegedly kidnapping and killing a 40-year-old businessman in Surat.

The arrested have been identified as Mukesh Sahu and Ravi Behera.

Jagdish Patel, the businessman and a money lender, had gone missing since October 2 and was found dead at a village near Sayan town.

According to police sources, Sahu had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from Patel and later repaid Rs 30,000. When Patel asked Sahu, owner of a small restaurant in Anjani industrial estate, to repay the remaining amount of Rs 70,000, the latter hatched a plan to eliminate the businessman.

Sahu and Bhera asked Patel to come to Sayan on October 2. When he reached there, the duo attacked him on his head killing him on the spot. After his death, they telephoned Patel’s son Vikas and asked him for a ransom of Rs 40 lakh for his father’s release. Meanwhile, they dumped Patel’s body in Kareli village near Sayan and fled the spot.

Vikas soon lodged a complaint of abduction with Amroli police following which the cops examined the list of persons to whom Patel had lent money.

Sahu and Bhera were later arrested after being traced by police on the basis of their mobile phone location. During questioning, they confessed to killing Patel.
