2 youths attacked with acid by elderly man over past enmity

Cuttack: Two youths sustained grievous burn injuries in an incident of acid attack allegedly conducted by a 50-year-old man at Chandini Chowk locality of Cuttack over past enmity, today.

A senior official in Lalbagh police station said that the two victims belong to Balu Bazaar in the city and one of them has been identified as 19-year-old Satyaban Sahu and the other youth as Satyaban’s friend. An altercation erupted between Satyaban and the elderly man in the morning and, in a fit of rage, the accused attacked the youth with an acidic substance that he had brought with him (the accused). However, the friend of Satyaban, who was standing nearby, also got injured in the fatal incident.

“The accused is a petty contractor engaged in colouring works. As I am a daily-wager and had previously approached him for work, he rang me in my mobile number today morning. After my younger sister picked up the call, the man used slang language and scolded by taking my name. Later, I and my friend went to the man’s house to restrain him from such rude behaviour. An altercation erupted between us and he attacked both of us with an acidic substance,” the victim Satyaban expressed.

“Following the brawl, all of a sudden, the elderly man mixed a white powder with water in a mug and threw the solution at us leaving both of us grievously injured,” the youth further said.

Some locals rescued the injured youths and admitted them to Cuttack SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in critical condition for treatment, the senior police official informed.

Further details are awaited.
