20 from Odisha get first JSPL ‘Swayamsiddh Samman’

Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) Foundation, which spearheads the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives of the company, today conferred ‘Swayamsiddh Samman’ on 20 persons and nine self-help groups (SHGs) from Angul, Barbil and Tensa in Odisha.

The honour was awarded in recognition of their exemplary courage, commitment and confidence that have enabled them to overcome adversities and create a unique identity of their own making them a source of inspiration for many in the state as well as nation.

The awardees were felicitated by Ms Shallu Jindal, co-chairperson of JSPL Foundation at a glittering function held here today.

The 20 persons conferred with the first-ever Samman constituted by the company are Balikram Munda (entrepreneurship), Bari Pradhan (adolescent healthcare), Bijay Behera (pottery), Chittaranjan Samant (teaching), Geeta Munda (business), Hemanta Kumar Sahu (fitter), Magdal Purty (middle school teacher), Philicita Toppo (nursery teacher), Namrata Pradhan (entrepreneur), Pradeep Sahu (mushroom farming), Rajanibala (transport), Rily Majhi (dairy farming), Santosh Nayak (commercial vehicles), Santosh Prasad (mechanic), Sansar Sahu and Banabihari Sahu (entrepreneurship), Sarbeswar Sahu (organic farming), Shushree Lipali (scholarship), Sumati Behera (tailoring) and Sushant Tripathy (livelihood).

Speaking on the occasion, Shallu Jindal said the awardees have been shortlisted on the basis of their contribution to the particular initiative that they have been a part of, how they have taken it forward and how it has changed their life.

“The idea of giving such awards was to recognize and nurture talent at the grassroots level. The 20 awardees will become ambassadors of the JSPL Foundation inspiring others. They will visit different areas in Odisha and other parts of the country to help and guide people who are facing problems in their respective fields,” she added.

Pradeep Sahu, a 26-year-old from village Nisha in Angul and one of the awardees, said he had no idea of his future goals till he came across the entrepreneurship skill building training under JSPL Foundation’s livelihood initiatives.

“Seeing my sincerity and hard work, the company provided me training in mushroom spawn production for a month. Today, I supervise a mushroom farming and spawn unit which manufactures 400 bottles per day with a monthly income of Rs 7000. I am able to supply orders not only to Angul but have also entered Dhenkanal and Jharsuguda markets,” said Sahu.
