24 deaths reported as heat wave continues to scorch Odisha

Even as 24 heatstroke deaths were reported from across Odisha, the ongoing heat wave in the state intensified further with temperature soaring over 40 degree Celsius in 16 towns and cities today

The industrial town of Talcher recorded the highest temperature of 44.3 degree Celsius while in Bhubaneswar the mercury levels shot up by nearly 2 degree today, clocking 42.2 degree Celsius.

There was no let-up in the gruelling heat wave conditions across the western, southern and northern districts.

A release by the local Met office here said temperature recorded 40 degree Celsius and above in Chandbali (41.2), Cuttack (40), Angul (43.7), Baripada (40), Jharsuguda (42.3), Keonjhargarh (41), Sambalpur (42.2), Sundargarh (41), Hirakud (42.3), Bhawanipatna (40.2), Bolangir (41), Phulbani (40.8), Titlagarh (42.5) and Sonepur (42.5).

The Met office has predicted that the heat wave is likely to be more intense in the next 48 hours till May 2 after which there is every likely that the heat wave would relent in the next four days.

Meanwhile, the number of reported sunstroke deaths in the state went up to 24.

The state government, however, has confirmed only three deaths so far.
