Phulbani, Sept 15:

More than 30 patients, admitted to the district headquarters hospital, Phulbani in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, developed serious complications after they were administered with antibiotic injection on Sunday.

According to reports, the state government had provided Edicef-SB antibiotic injections to the hospital for the patients suffering from cold and fever.

These injections, manufactured by Scott Edil Pharmacia Ltd, a Himachal Pradesh-based pharmaceutical company and certified by the World Health Organisation (WHO), were provided to the hospital authorities to be provided free of cost to the patients.

The injections were administered for the first time to 46 patients admitted in the Medicine ward on Sunday.

Soon after, these patients developed serious complications. While some patients complained of head reeling and vomiting, the other patients were found shivering.

The hospital authorities, after examining these patients, ordered the doctors to stop administration of the injection to the remaining patients.

Of the 46 patients, the condition of four patients was stated to be critical, hospital sources said.

“We have made all arrangements for these patients as there is no threat to their lives. We have decided not to administer this injection to any patient again”, said additional district medical officer (ADMO) Narayan Sethi.
