35 file nomination for ULB polls on second day

OST Bureau

Bhubaneswar, Oct 29;

Ignoring the ‘no court, no vote’ call given by the Central Action Committee (CAC) of the lawyers’ bodies, 35 nomination papers were filed on the second day of filing nominations for the polls in 22 urban local bodies (ULBs) in western Odisha.

With this, a total 104 nomination papers have now been filed for the election while no paper has been filed in 10 ULBs yet.

Meanwhile, political parties are in a Catch 22-situation about participating in the polls, especially since the lawyers’ body, which has been demanding permanent bench of Odisha high court, has decided to boycott the polls.

While BJD candidates filed their nominations at several places, BJP candidates are yet to file their nominations stating hinting that they have adopted a wait and watch policy.

“We are ready to go for poll in western Odisha. However, if the candidates of other political parties file their nomination papers, we will participate in the poll. But nothing can be said with certainty at this stage,” said senior Congress leader Narasingh Mishra. BJP leader Suresh Pujari also echoed the same view.

A Congress candidate filed his nomination in Jharsuguda on Monday.

According to State Election Commission (SEC), a total of 498 nomination papers, including 280 on the first day, have been sold till today.
