4 arrested in Odisha for duping 33 youth with job promise

Police in Sundargarh district of Odisha arrested four persons, including a married lady who claimed to be the Sundargarh Sadar MLA’s cousin, for duping dozens of people and forwarded them to court on Wednesday.

Jyotsna Singh, in connivance with her husband Chaitanya Ganjhu and two others, had allegedly duped 33 youth of about Rs 30 lakh after promising them jobs using the good offices of her purported cousin, Sundargarh MLA Yogesh Singh.

All the 33 unemployed youths, who had been allegedly duped by Jyotsna Singh, lodged complaints in Town police station against Jyotsna Singh. In their complaints, they mentioned that they had gone to Jyostna Singh’s house to ask her about their job, but she was absconding.

When police interrogated Jyotsna Singh’s husband Chaitanya about the allegation of the 33 unemployed youth , he told them that he will bring her to Town police station on Wednesday and assured that the amount she had taken from them would be returned to them.

On Wednesday, Chaityna Ganjhu, along with his wife Jyotsna Singh, came to the Town police station where Jyotsna refuted the allegations brought against her. However, the police, during investigation, found that there was merit in the allegation against them. Police later registered two cases against them.

During investigation, police came to know that Jyotsna’s brother-in-law Sahadev Badek (55) and another woman Laxmi Karkedia (27) were also involved with them in cheating jobless people. Laxmi had played a major role in roping in the gullible youth.

After investigation, police arrested Jyotsna Singh, her husband Chaitanya Ganjhu, her brother-in-law Sahadev Badek and Laxmi Karkedia and forwarded them to court under IPC section 420, 506 and 34 IPC.

“We have arrested four persons, including the couple, and forwarded them to court this evening. We are carrying out further investigation into the case,” said Town police sub inspector HK Behera.
