4 months after husband’s death, woman set on fire by father-in-law in Odisha. Here’s why

Jharsuguda: A 28-year-old woman, a widow, was allegedly set afire by her father-in-law over property dispute at Bhalupatra village under Laikera police limits in Jharsuguda district on Friday.

The matter came to the fore light after family members of the deceased identified as Rukmani Rohidas lodged a written complaint at Laikera police station in this regard.

Sources said Rukami, a native of Sambalpur, had married to Sukharam Rohidas, son of Banamali Rohidas a few years back. The couple had 4-year-old son. Four months ago, Sukharam died. After his death, Rukamani’s father-in-law used to have heated arguments with her over property.

On the fateful night, accused Banamali has a verbal duel with Rukmani over the same issue. In a fit of rage, he set Rukamni on fire after pouring kerosene on her.

She was later rushed to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) here in critical condition. The Jharsuguda police in presenece recorded the declarant’s statement, in which Rukamani accused Banamali of setting her afire. She later died while undergoing treatment at around 10 PM yesterday.

Acting on the complaint lodged by Rukmani’s family, the police began an investigation into the incident.
