Bhubaneswar, Nov 4:

Even as political parties are at loggerheads over fielding official candidates in the polls to 22 urban local bodies (ULBs) in nine districts of western Odisha, 569 candidates have filed their nomination papers so far.

But with just one day left for the filing of nominations, no nominations have been filed yet in four ULBs: Bolangir, Deogarh, Titlagarh and Khariar road. However, 1135 nomination papers were sold in these four ULBs, state election commission sources revealed.

It is to be noted that the last date for filing nominations was extended to November 5 instead of November 1 as notified earlier. The verification of nomination papers will be done on November 7 while the last date for withdrawal of papers is November 11.

Meanwhile, political parties are considering asking their candidates to withdraw their nominations in support of the ongoing agitation of lawyers’ bodies seeking a permanent bench of the High Court in western Odisha.

Delegations both from the Central Action Committee (CAC) of agitating western Odisha lawyers’ bodies and Balangir Bar Association today met chief justice of Odisha High Court separately and presented their memorandums to him.
