6 gamblers arrested in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar, June 24:

Six persons were arrested from a gambling den operating behind the Heads of Departments Building (Nataala) in Unit –V under Capital police limits here during raid by commissionerate police (CP) this evening.

The accused were identified as Babuli Sahu (34) of Dhalapathar under Begunia police limits in Khurda district, Choudhury Santosh Kumar Dash (34), Ramesh Chandra Mohanty (48), Rashmi Ranjan Parida (32), Suresh Kumar Sethi (27) and Niranjan Mallick (38), the last five from different places of the city, were booked under the Odisha Prevention of Gambling Act.

All accused will be forwarded to the local court here tomorrow, Capital police sources said.
Acting on a tip off, the Quick Action Team (QAT) of CP, along with Capital police station staff, conducted a raid on the gambling den and nabbed the accused. They also seized Rs 43,500 in cash, one car bearing registration number OD-02-J-4647, one unnumbered car, one two-wheeler (registration number- OR-02-N-1008) and seven mobile phones, informed Inspector-in-charge of Capital police station Manas Ranjan Garanaik. Further investigation of the case is in progress, he added.

Notably, on February 24, the same team had arrested six gamblers from a gambling den opposite Nirman Soudh of Unit-V area here and seized cash amounting to Rs 42,435 along with seven mobile phones from their possession.
