87-yr-old COVID patient sets herself on fire in Odisha

Puri: An octogenarian woman infected with COVID-19 set herself on fire at Jainabad under Nimapada NAC in Puri district.

Reportedly, Shailabala (87) had tested positive for the virus few days ago and was under home isolation.

Some locals alleged that close relatives of the deceased were neglecting in providing food and treatment to the the old  woman. Last night, the harassed woman decided to end her life. She locked herself in the room and set herself afire after pouring kerosene on her body.

“She had tested positive for COVID-19 and was under home isolation. However, her close relatives did not take proper care of her. They didn’t provide her food or proper medical treatment,” alleged a neighbour.

On receiving information, Nimapada police along with fire officials reached the spot and began an investigation. Besides, the body was sent to Puri with the help of the district administration for conduct of her last rites.
