89 multipurpose indoor stadiums to come up across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: With an aim to give a boost to the development of infrastructure for sports in Odisha, the State government today decided to build 89 multipurpose indoor stadiums. During the State Cabinet meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, a decision was taken to build the multipurpose indoor stadiums at the cost of Rs 693.35 crores within 18 months.

The 89 multipurpose indoor stadiums will be constructed under the State-Level Sports Infrastructure Development Project.

Official sources said the indoor stadiums will have facilities for sports such as badminton, table tennis, weightlifting and gymnasium. Besides, the multipurpose indoor stadiums will function as shelters during the natural calamities like cyclone and flood. The stadiums will be able to resist wind speed around 200 km/hr, the official sources informed.

During pandemic these multipurpose indoor stadiums will also function as 50-bed hospital in NAC areas and 100-bed hospital in municipal areas. The government also aims to use these stadiums to organize training programmes, official meetings and exam centres, official sources added.

A total of 16 proposals received approval of the State Cabinet during today’s meeting.
