96.58% SEZ land in Odisha remain unutilised: CAG

Taking note of non-utilisation of land earmarked for Special Economic Zones (SEZ) in several states including Odisha as per the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), the Centre is planning for development of these unused land by bringing amendments in the existing SEZ rules.

As per the CAG report, which was recently presented in the Parliament, out of a total of 45635.63 hectares of SEZ land allotted till 2014, work has begun in only 28,488.49 hectares.

In Odisha, 96.58 percent of SEZ land has remained unutilised, the report said while the recommending the Centre to direct 17 states including Odisha to take expeditious step in this regard.

Official sources said that Union Commerce and Industries ministries would write letters to the state government asking them to report the status of SEZ lands. Besides, the ministries would also issue strict orders and ask the concerned industries and companies to start their work on the SEZ land allotted to them at the earliest.
