Abandoned by children, old Odisha man battling for life

After being abandoned by his children, a 70-year old man in  Odisha’s Steel City of Rourkela is now battling for his life at Rourkela Govt.hospital.

Sources said the old man was spotted lying at Bus stop at Sector-2 based Sushilabati  Womens College’ on Wednesday afternoon. A plate of rice with onion and cucumber was also found near him. After hearing about the  helpless condition of this old man, volunteers of  Lead Rourkela, a social organisation, reached the spot and enquired the oldperson about his identity.

Though he was not able to speak properly due to his critical health condition, he managed to convey his name as Suresh Behera (70). On further enquiring, he could only say that he has also  two daughters, residing at Rairangpur.

The man was  rescued and  rushed  to Rourkela Govt Hospital (RGH) and was admitted in critical condition. While enquiring at RGH, it came to notice that this old man has been suffering from jundice. He had been admitted in RGH and on 20th April, someone from his family had taken him after he had been discharged
from RGH.

But the person who had taken him from hospital, had not taken him to residence rather had left him at Bus stop shed. According to doctor at RGH, presently he is also suffering from jaundice and Hepatitis and doctors suspects he has also Gal bladder Mass which leads to Cancer.

The old person is now battling for his life at RGH. Lead Rourkela has provided na attendant near this  old person to look after him. This organnisation is now contemplating to meet Rourkela ADM on Saturday to request him to provide financial assistance from Red Cross for his further treatment.

“We strongly condemn the act of the children in abandoning their father. We are trying out best to provide him necessary support,” said Aira Mohanty of Lead Rourkela.

“His health condition is not good.We are providing our best services to him.We are thinking of referring him to Burla hospital. At the same time, we are trying to unearth his family particulars so that they can be contacted,” said H.A.Khan, Medicine Specialist, Rourkela Govt.Hospital.

” It is really heart  rending story as this old man in this health condition, has been abandoned by his children.” Khan added in a chocked voice.
