Actor Sabyasachi rescues Odia migrants tortured by middleman in Tamil Nadu

Bhubaneswar: Actor Sabyasachi Mishra, whose good deeds during the COVID-19 lockdown made him stand out as a Messiah for many in Odisha and outside, is once again in news for his generosity.

With the help of Odisha police and Tamil Nadu counterpart, the actor has rescued 35 Odia migrants, who had been mentally and physically tortured by a middleman in the state since last few days.

The exploitation came to fore after one of the  victims uploaded a video showing the middleman thrashing the Odia youth on Twitter tagging the actor. Immediately responding to the tweet, Sabyasachi contacted Tamil Nadu DGP JK Tripathi seeking help.

With joint efforts of Tamil Nadu police, Odisha police and Labour Department, the migrants were rescued from  clutches of the middleman. The accused has also been arrested by the local police, sources said.

After being rescued, the youth narrated their plight before the cops. One Munna said 35 youth from Bhadrak  district went to Tamil Nadu in search of work after the COVID-19 situation slightly improved few months ago.

“The middleman took us with him assuring us of work. But when lockdown was imposed in the state, he started assaulting us over trivial issues.  In fact, we were left to starve over the last two days,” he said.

Later, the T13 Kunrathur police provided them accommodation for a temporary period. Besides, social activist Bibhuti Bisoi and NGO Smile Force member Naveen Bhandari have arranged food for them. The activists also assured that they will look after the migrants until they return to their hometown.
