Adaptive traffic signal system installed in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) installed the much-awaited Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) solution at various traffic squares across the city.

The ATSC solution was installed at 50 junctions with an aim to provide traffic and transit management services to the traffic police to improve traffic congestion and delays in the smart city.

The system with some important features, which were implemented for the first time in the city, will be integrated in the centralised command and control centre in future.

With installation of the ATSC system, it will improve travel time reliability by progressively moving vehicles through intersections, reduce traffic congestion by creating smoother flow across intersections, distribution of green phase time equitably for all approaches, faster response to traffic conditions and emergencies, said a press release.

The Adaptive Traffic Signal Control solution not only collects real time traffic data but also optimizes the signal phases in real time to reduce delays.

The adaptive signals will support predicting traffic volumes and adjust signal timings to match these volumes, said the release.

The specially designed uniform traffic poles with signals mounted on horizontal cantilevers enhances visibility of signals from long distance. The directional signage put atop traffic poles provides improved visibility.

As an innovative step towards ensuring optimum use of green (renewable) energy source, the entire traffic signal control network is operated on solar energy generated from composite solar panels fitted on the signals.

A temporary traffic signal control room has started operating at BSCL office in Bhawani Mall to integrate all the 50 ATSC system.

The traffic signal control room will be integrated after the Master System Integrator (MSI) starts working for the city coordinating all ICT-based interventions. The traffic signal control room will operate from BSCL office till the MSI sets up temporary command and control centre.

Besides, there will be 14 pelican signals and 5 blinkers at different locations to ensure road safety conditions. The pelicans and blinkers are in due process of getting installed and they will be completed very soon.

While the pelicans can be used by the pedestrians to cross the busy roads by pressing a signal button to stop traffic for the safe passage of the crowd to the other side of the road, blinkers will help the commuters to be cautious while manoeuvring near an important junction.

Notably, the Adaptive traffic signal control solution inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on June 22, 2017 was first implemented on pilot basis at five intersections on the busy Sachivalaya Marg Street in Bhubaneswar.

The system uses the latest technology in traffic engineering, Composite Signal Control Strategy (CoSiCoSt), developed by C-DAC, Pune.
