Annual bird census on Jan 5 in Odisha’s Chilika

Puri: The annual bird census will begin on January 5 next year in Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon.

A notification in this regard has been issued by the PCCF office, Bhubaneswar to the Divisional Forest Officer, Puri, on Monday.

As per the notification, the bird counting will take place on Jan 5 in Chilika, Jan 3 on Puri district and the Dolphin census will be conducted on January 19.

Every year, the bird counting is conducted at 12 places including Chilika in Puri district. January 3 has been fixed for carrying out the bird census in Puri district and the process will begin on Jan 5 at Chilika, informed Harsh Vardhan Udgata, the Division Forest Officer, Puri.

The Dolphin census will be carried out on January 19. The counting will take place at around 65 km coastal area from the Devi Mouth of Chilika. A special team will be engaged and a training programme in this regard will be held on January 2.

Last year, the State registered total 114 dolphins in Chilika.
