The deceased farmer identified as Basudeb Bhoi hailed from Ghusuramuda village under Budhipadar panchayat of Bolangir district.

Basudeb had allegedly consumed poison on Thursday after his paddy crops had failed due to scanty rainfall and was undergoing treatment at VIMSAR. His family members have alleged that he was going through severe mental stress as his crops were ruined and prospects of repaying loans were remote.

According to the deceased farmer’s family members, Basudeb had cultivated paddy in seven acres of land and had borrowed Rs 50,000 from individuals as hand loans.

On Basudeb’s body arriving in his native village, fellow villagers staged a road block demanding compensation for the deceased farmer’s family.
