Two farmers succumb to suicide bids in Odisha’s Bolangir

Yet another debt-ridden farmer succumbed to his suicide attempt at the Patnagarh sub-divisional hospital in Odisha’s Bolangir district today taking the death toll due to farmer suicides in the district to two today.

The farmer identified as Krutibash Gahir of Ramud village under Tureikela block died at the Sub-divisional hospital at Patnagarh this afternoon while undergoing treatment.

Krutibash had cultivated paddy and cotton in his fields by taking loans. However, due to scanty rainfall his crops were ruined and he was worried over the prospects of repaying his loans, reports said.

Reportedly, Krutibash who had lost his mental balance over crop loss and debts had consumed poison to end his life. He was first admitted to Kantabanji hospital for treatment but was later shifted to Patnagarh hospital as his condition deteriorated. However, he succumbed to his suicide attempt at the hospital this afternoon.

Earlier in the day, another farmer, Parikhita Nag of Batharala village under Sindhikela police limits in the district succumbed to his suicide attempt while undergoing treatment at the Mission Hospital in Khariar.

Parikhita had consumed poison on October 25 and was admitted to the Mission Hospital in a critical condition for treatment.

However, after three days Nag lost the struggle and was declared dead by the doctors today.

Parikhita had borrowed money from relatives and friends for growing cotton in two acres of land and paddy in one acre. Lack of rain had resulted in crop failure adding to his worries. Under severe mental stress Nag had taken the extreme step of committing suicide by drinking poison.
