Another low pressure ‘brewing’, more rainfall across Odisha after July 25

The low pressure area which lay over the north periphery of the Bay and the adjoining West Bengal and Bangladesh on Sunday morning is likely to shift to north Odisha on Monday and to west Odisha and Chhatisgarh on Tuesday (22 July), the head of Agrometeorology department of the OUAT Prof SN Pasupalak said today.

Based on an anlysis of the India Met department data, he said a new low pressure area (LPA) is likely to be formed on North-West Bay on July 25 or 26, if the current LPA moves westward as predicted.

However, if the present LPA stays over the Bay or adjopining land, the formation of the next LPA may be delayed beyond 25 July , the agrometeorologist said.

Prof Pasupalak said ” the flow in the rivers is likely to increase suddenly in Baitarini, Bansadhara, Rushikulya, rivers in Kalahandi upstream of Mahanadi and those in the upper catchment of Mahanadi” due to widespread rainfall.

“The first half of of Sunday will see widespread rainfall in the state except south interior. However, with the movement of the current LPA, the rainfall activity in the state would increase.The south interior part consisting of undivided Ganjam, Koraput, Kandhamal and Kalahandi may get widespread heavy rainfall with a few places getting very heavy rainfall from Sunday evening,” Prof Pasupalak said.

On Tuesday, rainfall may recede in the coastal areas, but is likely to continue in the western districts, particularly South West Odisha and adjoining Chhatisgarh, he said.

The farm operations have slowed down and are likely to be further delayed due to continuous rainfall, he said while issuing a set of advisories to farmers and the state Agriculture department to deal with the weather situation.
