Ashram chief among 6 arrested after leopard carcass recovery in Odisha’s Subarnapur

The arrests were made after a highly decomposed carcass of the big cat was recovered from a jungle in Chandali village near Baghapali Ashram on Tuesday.

Subarnapur: Days after recovery of a leopard carcass, forest sleuths arrested six persons including an Ashram chief on the charge of poaching from Ulunda range of Subarnapur district in Odisha on Friday. The arrests were made after a highly decomposed carcass of the big cat was recovered from a jungle in Chandali village near Baghapali Ashram on Tuesday. The accused include Ashram chief Danabihari Saran alias Dayasagar Tharti, Surendra Pradhan, Biju Guru, Ramchandra Purohit, Purandar Tharti and Satyanarayan Meher.

Official sources said the leopard was electrocuted after coming in touch with a live wire laid out by the poachers to trap the animal. After recovering the carcass, forest officials had registered a case. Sonepur ACF Prafulla Dharua said Ulunda foresterPrasanna Nayak and his counterpart from Jaloi lead a team to investigate the matter and nabbed the accused. The animal’s claws were also recovered from their possession, he said.
