Auction for Sarpanch post in Odisha: SEC seeks report from District Collector

Bhubaneswar: Hours after a national daily published on an auction for the post of Sarpanch in a gram panchayat of Balangir district, the State Election Commission (SEC) sought a report from the District Collector today.

The SEC Secretary RN Sahu in a letter to Balangir Collector Chanchal Rana in the evening asked him to submit a factual report on the news report by 5 PM on January 18, 2022 positively.

A report published by the Time of India, Bhubaneswar edition on January 17, 2022, stated that a group of influential persons in Bilaisarda panchayat under Puintala block of the district auctioned the post of Sarpanch for Rs 44.1 lakh.

Out of four bidders for, one won the right to become Sarpanch unopposed for Rs 44.1 lakhs, the report mentioned.

Bilaisarda panchayat consists of Bilaisarda, Bandanakanta and Kasurupali villages consisting of 15 wards. The post of Sarpanch has been notified as unreserved while the post for Samiti Member has been reserved for a woman ST candidate.

Today, filing of nominations papers for the panchayat elections in the State began. The three-tier panchayat polls will be held in February.
