Baby branded with hot iron by aunt dies in Odisha’s Keonjhar

Keonjhar: Death of infants due to superstitious belief of branding them with hot objects in order to cure ailments continues unabated in Odisha as another baby fell prey to the practice in Keonjhar district.

In a shocking incident, an 18-day-old baby boy was branded with hot iron by his aunt at Pidhapokhari village under Joda police limits in the district two days ago in a bid to cure swelling around the infant’s stomach.

He was brought to the Keonjhar district headquarters hospital in a critical condition where the baby succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment in the ICU.

Tall claims of administration regarding creation of awareness among people to stay away from such superstitious practises have gone for a toss with the incident coming to fore.
