Baby chimpanzee dies moments after birth in Odisha Zoo

13-year-old Purnima, a chimpanzee living in Odisha’s Nandankanan zoo, gave birth to a girl child yesterday, but the baby chimpanzee died moments after birth.

Earlier, the zoo vets had predicted the delivery would take place between May 4 – 20 and had made all preparations for it, but couldn’t save the child.

While the cause of the death is yet to be known, Purnima appeared quite disturbed over it as she did not let go of the body of the new-born.

The chimpanzee, kept in enclosure 61 (A) of the zoological garden, had lost another child earlier. Out of its three deliveries, only one male chimpanzee named Kartik has survived.
