Bandh over lawyer’s murder hits normal life in Odisha’s Puri

Bhubaneswar: A 12-hour bandh called by the Puri Bar Association over the murder of lawyer Laxmidhar Mohapatra crippled normal life in the pilgrim town of Odisha today.

Opposing deteriorated law and order situation in the town and demanding reshuffle at the district administrative level, agitating lawyers staged road blockade at various places bringing vehicular movement to a grinding halt.

While protest was staged by them at Medical Chhak here by burning tyres, road was blocked at Atharanala, a prime entry point to the town, due to which many vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the road.

Buses also remained off the roads here causing inconvenience for the passengers and commuters. Shops, business establishments, educational institutions and government offices also remained closed in view of the bandh.

Puri-Cuttack and Puri-Gunupur passenger trains remained halted at the Puri railway station as the agitators resorted to ‘rail roko’.

On the other hand, BJP, Congress, Orissa High Court Bar Association and Bhubaneswar Bar Association have extended their support to the bandh.

The Orissa High Court lawyers have also resorted to a day-long cease work today.

Notably, lawyer Laxmidhar Mohapatra sustained critical injuries after he was thrashed with a wooden plank on October 18. He later succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital.

Police had on October 22 arrested two persons including prime accused Jyoti Shankar Pradhan in the murder case. Police revealed that personal enmity led to the fatal attack.
