Bank iron chest found in abandoned quarry in Odisha capital

Several youth on Monday stumbled upon a metal object in a laterite quarry while taking bath at Patra Sahi under Pipili police limits in Nijigadakurakhi Mouza on the outskirts of the Odisha capital.

On going deep into the quarry, they found out the object to be an iron chest following which they informed the Pipili police.

The police along with the fire brigade personnel reached the spot to recover the box.

“We have recovered some cheque books, fixed books and other documents from the iron chest. We could not recover the iron chest due to poor light. We would continue the operation tomorrow morning,” Pipili IIC, Jadunath Jena said.

An iron chest having cheque books, fixed deposit (FD) certificates and other documents were seized by local police in the evening.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the seized materials were looted from R Colliery UCO Bank Branch under Brajarajnagar police station limits.

Police would fish out the iron chest from the laterite quarry on Tuesday as the recovery operation was suspended due to poor light conditions. Besides, a crane would be used to lift the heavy iron box from the water, sources in the police said.

As per police, an iron chest along with Rs 3.72 lakh cash and other vital documents was looted from R Colliery UCO Bank Branch under Brajarajnagar police station limits in Jharsuguda district on July 11, 2013. A case (145/2013) was registered at Brajarajnagar police station and probe was launched. However, police was unable to make any breakthrough in the incident.

As the bank documents were found in the locality, police suspects involvement of some locals in the bank robbery.
