In a major setback, a local court here yesterday rejected former Odisha minister Raghunath Mohanty’s plea to exclude him and his wife as parties in a domestic violence (DV) case filed by their daughter-in-law Barsa Swony Choudhury.

Barswa Swony had filed a DV case at the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court here against her estranged husband Rajashree Mohanty in which her father-in-law Raghunath Mohanty and mother-in-law Pritilata Mohanty were made parties in the case.

The five-time Basta MLA Raghunath Mohanty and his wife had filed a petition in the court to exclude them as parties in the case. After series of hearings in the case, the court yesterday rejected the plea of Raghunath Mohanty.

It may be recalled that Barsa Swony’s husband—Rajashree Mohanty– had moved the District and Sessions Judge court here on July 24 last year seeking to drop domestic violence charges against him. However, the court rejected Rajashree’s plea. A similar plea field by the petitioner in the lower court was also rejected earlier.

On March 14, 2013, Barsa had accused Rajashree, her father-in-law Raghunath Mohanty, mother-in-law Pritilata Mohanty, sister-in-law Rupashree Madhual and brother-in-law Suvendu Madhual of torturing her physically and mentally for dowry.

On January 14 this year, Balasore Family Court had directed Rajashree Mohanty to pay Barsa Swony Choudhury a monthly interim maintenance of Rs 25, 000 in an alimony case filed by her.
