Basant Mohanty case in Odisha capital: U/D case turned to murder

Two days after it registered a case of ‘unnatural death’ (U/D) following the recovery of the body of Basant Mohanty, a resident of Badagada in the Odisha capital, commissionerate police on Sunday turned the same into a murder case slapping section 302 of the IPC against the accused.

Prashant Mohanty, brother of the deceased along with the family members, had lodged an FIR regarding this matter at the Balianta police station on April 23 suspecting his brother had been murdered by some local goons and had demanded a thorough investigation into the matter by the police.

Later, Balianta police referred the case to Badagada police on April 24 which called Prashant the same day to lodge an FIR again.

The case was handed over to zonal ACP Akshaya Kumar Mishra for investigation.

In the time since then, the police was able to nab three persons and gathered evidence of their involvement in the case. The accused persons were Ganesh, Felu while another person Prakash Mohanty alias Bubuna is still absconding.

After recording the statement of the detainees, police registered the murder case on Sunday and slapped other sections like 201 and 34 of IPC against them.

“The Diatom report (role of drowning) which we will get tomorrow from the State Forensic Laboratory (SFL) in the city would reveal whether the deceased has been murdered by the aforesaid accused or had died due to drowning,” Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Satyabrata Bhoi said,

As per the statement given by the accused, Basant was in a drunken state on the night of the incident.

There were no injury marks on the swollen body of the deceased when it was recovered from under the Daya river bridge on the outskirts of the city to suggest it was a case of murder, the DCP said..

Badagada police sent the river water from where the body was recovered and the Viscera report of Basant to the city SFL on Saturday.

Notably late on April 20 night, Balianta police had recovered the body of Basant from Daya River under Balianta police limits on the outskirts of the city.
