Berhampur: 12 held over fetal sex determination, 2 ultrasound machines seized

Berhampur: The Baidyanathpur police today arrested as many as 12 persons over their alleged involvement in fetal sex determination in Odisha’s Berhampur town, today.

Police have seized two ultrasound machines and Rs 18,200 from their possession.

According to reports, a police team, acting on a tip-off, raided a house at Anand Nagar where the illegal activity was being done.

As many as 11 pregnant women were present at the spot during the raid. Police informed the CDMO about the incident, following which a team of the Health Department was sent to the place.

Durgaprasad Nayak, owner of the house, and 11 others were then arrested and forwarded to court. An ASHA worker and two middlemen are among the arrested ones.

Many employees of various clinics and hospitals in the town have involvement in the offence, police said, adding that the fetal sex determination activity was undergoing at the house for the last two years.
