Bhubaneswar to experience ‘Zero Shadow’ today; Know Timing

Bhubaneswar: Odisha capital will witness ‘Zero Shadow’ phenomenon today, said Subendu Pattnaik, Deputy Director, Pathani Samanta Planetarium here.

At 11:43 am, there will be no shadow of any object/ living being under the Sun for 2 to 3 minutes, he said.

The planetarium authorities have made necessary arrangements in this regard for interested spectators.

Similarly, Cuttack will experience the celestial event tomorrow.

Zero Shadow Day is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs twice a year in certain regions of the Earth. On Zero Shadow Day, the Sun is positioned directly overhead at noon, causing objects on the ground to cast no shadow. This phenomenon happens when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky and directly aligned with the observer’s latitude.

Zero Shadow Day occurs in regions located near the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. These regions experience the phenomenon because the Sun’s rays are nearly perpendicular to the Earth’s surface. As a result, objects on the ground receive sunlight from directly above, causing their shadows to disappear.
