Bhubaneswar: Woman spends two days with husband’s body after his death

Bhubaneswar: In a highly shocking incident, a woman reportedly spent two days with her husband’s body in a house following his death at Mandap Basti in Damana area of Odisha capital.

As per reports, deceased Shyam Mundari (35) of Karanjia area in Mayurbhanj district and his wife Jhingi Mundari (53) attacked each other inside their house in an inebriated state after consuming liquor on September 19 night.

Worth mentioning, Jhingi was earlier Shyam’s sister-in-law. He married her following the death of his elder brother. Later, the couple shifted from Mayurbhanj to Bhubaneswar in the search of work. While Shyam was working as a contractual sweeper for the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Jhingi works as a domestic.

A dispute was prevailing between the two over not having a child after several years of marriage. The dispute turned into a heated exchange of words and subsequent attack on each other on the fateful night. Jhingi hit Shyam with a wooden plank during the quarrel, reports said.

As the two were under the influence of liquor, both slept after the fight. However, Shyam didn’t wake up next morning. As Jhingi realised that Shyam had died, she tried not to disclose the matter fearing that she would be accused of killing him.

After spending two days with the body inside the house, she decided to cremate it at their village. However, driver of the hearse noticed that the body had decomposed. Suspecting foul play, the driver informed the police.

The Chandrasekharpur police then detained Jhingi for questioning. On the basis of a complaint lodged by Shyam’s nephew, police have registered a case and started an investigation into the incident.

“Preliminary probe revealed that it is not a case of murder as the body didn’t bear any injury mark. Post-mortem report is awaited. Further course of action will be decided after the submission of the autopsy report,” a police official said.
