Biramitrapur MLA George Tirkey joins Congress

Bhubaneswar: Biramitrapur MLA George Tirkey officially joined the Congress party at Delhi in presence of AICC president Rahul Gandhi and Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Niranjan Patnaik today. Many supporters of Tirkey also joined the Congress.

Convenor of Mahanadi Bachao Andolan, Sudarshan Das also joined the party on the occasion.

“Tirkey is a senior tribal leader… I strongly believe that Odisha Congress will be strengthened by their joining the party,” said Patnaik.

Tirkey said he will work to defeat the “corrupt” government led by Naveen Patnaik and the “communal” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Congress is likely to field Tirkey, a four-time MLA, from Sundargarh Lok Sabha constituency in 2019. However, the PCC President said the party will take a decision at the appropriate time.

Notably, the legislator was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly for the first time from Biramitrapur constituency in 1995 and again in 2000 as a JMM candidate. He had then joined BJD in 2002.

After being denied party ticket in 2004, he had unsuccessfully fought the Sundargarh Lok Sabha election and Biramitrapur Assembly polls as Independent candidate. In 2009 and 2014, he was again elected from Birmitrapur constituency.
