Bird flu: Over 1000 chickens culled in Odisha’s Angul

Angul, Feb 15:

Amid bird flu outbreak, over 1000 chickens were culled yesterday at government poultry farm in Odisha’s Angul district.

Five Rapid Reception team of the farm culled total 1055 “banraj” variant of chickens on the first day of the culling drive yesterday in the district.

The culling drive has been expedited in Hemsurpada area of Angul.

“Total 1055 banraj chickens were killed after outbreak of bird flu in the district. The chickens were buried in the ground after killing them. The drive will continue today in the district. All the chickens will be killed especially within 1 km radius of bird flu infected farm”, said Farm Manager Dr Sunil Kumar Ray.

Taking preventive measures, all the chicken centres have been temporarily closed in the area. The restriction has been imposed on import of chickens from outside the district. The district administration ordered ban on use consumption of chicken, duck and eggs at least for three months.

Further initiative will be taken after bird flu test after three months.

Meanwhile, the area between 10-km-radius of the government poultry farm has been declared as the ‘alert zone’.

Angul collector Anil Kumar Samal has advised the civic body to make the cleanliness drive extensive in the area.

The government will compensate for culling of the chickens, eggs and chicken feed.
