Blind girl rape and murder: State files affidavit in HC

OST Bureau
Cuttack, Jan 31:

The state Home department on Thursday filed an affidavit in the Odisha High Court on the action taken by the government on the brutal gang rape and murder of a 10-year-old blind girl at her village Beladala under Puri sadar police station limits on June 6 last year.

The affidavit, submitted by the additional secretary, Home Prafulla Chandra Pradhan, has stated that of the Rs 1.5 lakh compensation announced by the state government to the family of the victim, Rs 75, 000 has been paid so far. Apart from this, the district collector has provided Rs 10,000 to the victim’s family.

In response to the directive of the National Commission for Women (NCW), the affidavit said that the state government has asked the local police to probe into the case instead of going for the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe as directed by the Commission.

It also has stated that since the state government has set up a woman and child desk in each police station in Puri, there has been no women police station and no deployment of any special forces in the railway station in the pilgrim city at present.

However, steps have been taken for deployment of special women police force, the affidavit informed the court.

The court later asked the petitioners to file a counter to the government affidavit.

Meanwhile, alleging that the affidavit filed by the government has no detailed information, the petitioners have said that the state government has only provided a casual reply and failed to comply with the directive of the NCW.
