Brown sugar worth Rs 1 cr seized in Cuttack; 3 peddlers held

Cuttack: Intensifying its crackdown against illegal drug trade, the Commissionerate Police seized brown sugar worth approximately Rs 1 crore and arrested three persons in Cuttack.

Based on an intelligence input, the personnel of CDA-II police station, Cuttack set up check points to apprehend three drug peddlers coming towards CDA Cuttack via Madhusudan Setu on June 6. While frisking vehicles, the police personnel detained three persons with one Yamaha R-15 Motor Cycle bearing registered no. OD-01-Q-6978 and one TATA Indica Car bearing registered no. OR-01-N-0160 suspecting their movement.

Upon a search of the vehicles, the police personnel recovered 1.038 kg brown sugar in 10 polythene packets were recovered. The estimated value of the seized brown sugar is approximately Rs 1 crore. Following this, the Commissionerate Police arrested the three persons, Sk. Tamir, Sk. Ersat and Sk. Tamju from Gobindapur village in Mayurbhanj district. The three accused were forwarded to a court today.

During questioning the three accused said they have been staying at Rajpur Basti, Jaleswar currently. They further disclosed that they are the vendors illegally dealing with brown sugar and have been supplying to local dealers in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur and Puri after procuring in huge quantity from Calcutta via Jaleswar regularly.

Also, the vehicles and four mobile phones were seized from the drug peddlers.

A case CDA-II PS Case No.44, dtd.06.06.2021, U/s 21(C) NDPS Act has been registered and investigation is on to find out involvement of others.

Twin City Commissioner of Police SK Priyadarshi informed the Cuttack Urban Police District has seized more than 4 kg brown sugar and arrested 27 drug peddlers during a special drive in 2021.

He also appealed general public to inform the Commissionerate of Police about selling of drugs in the Twin City and assured identity of the informants will not be disclosed.
