Cab driver arrested in Odisha for running over puppies

Bhubaneswar: A cab driver has been arrested in Odisha capital today on charges of mowing down four puppies.

Chandrasekhar Police arrested Kanhucharan Giri for running over four puppies near Sailashree Vihar here.

People for Animals –an organization working for the welfare of animals, had filed a complaint with the local police leading to arrest of the taxi driver.

Worth mentioning, the organization was started by Menaka Gandhi in 1992 who is the current chairperson.

Following the complaint, a case was registered under 279, 429 of IPC r/w 11 of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and 184 of MV Act.

Killing of dogs is illegal under section 428 (mischief of killing and maiming animal) which is punishable both imprisonment and fine. This is also violation of 279 of IPC and 184 of Motor Vehicle Act. It is also violation of section 11 of Prevention of Cruelty of Animals Act 1960, Jiban B Das, member secretary, State Animal Welfare Board in the complaint seeking action against the accused.

While the incident took place in front of an apartment under Sailashree Vihar area, the security guard of the apartment tried to stop the vehicle but it fled. All the four puppies died on the spot.
