Pakistan had the first major opening, Muhammad Arslan Qadir hitting the outside of the goal following a great piece of skill by Muhammad Dilber.

However, Australia came back strongly after Jeremy Hayward scored the first goal through a penalty corner in the 23rd minute.

Though Pakistan tried their best in the final quarter, they failed to give the finishing touch.

On the other hand, the relentless Aussies increased the lead when Hayward flicked home his second goal with seven minutes left while Whetton completed the rout with 90 seconds to go with a simple touch.

“We stuck to our game plan and this paid off in the end. The quarter finals will be a tough match, let’s see what’s happened. Today’s win was mentally important as we needed a win to get on the board”, said Hayward after the match.

“The boys did not play well today and missed a number of opportunities. But they are improving by the match and meeting any team in the quarter finals will not make much of a difference as all eight teams are strong and anyone can win on any given day,” Pakistan coach Sheikh Shahnaz said.
