The DGP said the proteseors barged into the police station and attacked the SP and collector who were engaged in a discussion on the matter. He said 15 policemen were injured in the attack by the protesters.

Marik said the police was forced to take action to disperse the protesters. He said the police first resorted to lathi charge, then lobbed tear gas shells and finally had to resort to firing to disperse the mob.

“Two from the mob were injured in the firing and one them died. He has been identified as Pradip Behera,” informed the DGP.

The incident took place after protesters, who were on a sit-in strike near the police outpost, confronted the police over its failure to trace the criminals responsible for the brutal quadruple murder on Saturday, local sources said.

On Saturday night, four members of a family, including two children, were found murdered inside their house at Shastri Nagar in Chandpur under Ranpur police station limits in Odisha’s Nayagarh district. The local people have since been demanding the arrest of the culprits but the police have so far failed to crack the case.
