Child marriage bid foiled in Odisha’s Sundargarh

Rourkela: An attempt to marry off a minor girl was foiled by officials of the District Childline in Kutrapalli village under Nuagaon block in Sundargarh district today. The Childline officials rescued the minor girl and kept her at a shelter home in Bisra.

As per reports, marriage of the minor girl was fixed with one Sudam Mahato from Western Singhbhum district in Jharkhand. Last evening Mahato along with wedding party arrived at the minor girl’s house and the ceremonies also began.

Meanwhile, some villagers informed the District Childline about the minor girl’s marriage. After receiving information, the Childline officials reached the girl’s house and stopped the marriage.

During a preliminary inquiry, the Childline officials came to know the minor girl is 16 years old. With the help of Hatibari police, the Childline then rescued the girl.

Later the police detained Mahato for questioning in connection with the matter.
