Child rights centre inaugurated at National Law University, Odisha

A Centre for Child Rights (CCR) was inaugurated today at the National Law University, Odisha (NLUO) here with the objective to safeguard, protect and promote child rights.

“The Centre envisions providing integrated support to different layers of institutional governance in local, state and national level for the protection of child rights. The centre has been established with an objective to safeguard, protect and promote child rights in India. This is the second such centre established in India after NLSIU, Bangalore,” Prof (Dr) Srikrisha Deva Rao, Vice-Chancellor, NLU said.

Yumi Bae, the Chief Field Officer for UNICEF Odisha highlighted the fruitful partnership entered into with NLUO and hoped it would help promote expert capacity building and research analysis.

Saswat Mishra, IAS, Secretary, Department of Women and Child Development, promised all assistance from the government for the growth of this noble initiative.

Justice Sanju Panda, Judge of the High Court of Orissa and Chairperson, Orissa High Court Committee on Juvenile Justice, highlighted the fact that children can be kept away from evil by way of value based education. The Acting Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court and Chancellor, NLUO, Justice PK Mohanty pointed out that any development in Child Rights should be complemented by growth of all stakeholders.

The chief guest for the programme, Justice Dipak Misra, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Visitor, NLU Odisha pointed out the need for child rights to be recognized as human rights and as part of the rule of law. He also said that it is the duty of the State to provide rehabilitation centres for drug addiction. Further, he also said that the growth of child rehabilitation can be improved by providing them vocational skills.
