Class VIII student impregnated on pretext of marriage, accused held

Keonjhar: A Class VIII tribal girl student of a residential school in Keonjhar district was impregnated by a youth from the district, allegedly on the pretext of marriage. Based on a complaint filed by the minor girl, the police arrested the youth today.

The Class VIII girl student returned home after the residential school and hostel were closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic earlier this year.

She came in contact with a youth, Chitrasen Patra from Kantola village under Harichandanpur police limits, who used to frequently visit his relative’s house. As the girl student was neighbour to Patra’s relative, the accused somehow persuaded her to fall in love. Subsequently the youth established physical relationship with the minor girl on the promise to marry her.

After the girl returned to the residential school when it reopened, routine medical examination of her was carried out. She was found to be five-month pregnant.

She lodged a complaint, following which a case no 170/21 was registered at Harichandanpur police station.

Police official sources said the accused was arrested and forwarded to the court today. The girl has been sent to for medical examination, the official added.
