At least ten contractual workers and seven officials of BMC were pressed into service to clear the famous water body of heavy green algae, water hyacinth and other pollutants nearly ten days ahead of the ‘Kartika Purnima’ celebrations.

Devotees take a dip in the Lake before going ahead with the customary boat sailing ritual.

“The cleanliness drive will be completed before the ‘Kartika Purnima’ on November 25. We would continue the cleaning of the lake after that also as it would be again polluted with paper boats sailed by devotees on that occasion,” BMC Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena said.

Notably, hundreds of devotees throng the Lake to participate in the ‘Boita Bandana’ celebration by sailing miniature boats to observe the rich maritime glory of Odisha in the past.

Meanwhile, the workers are netting the water hyacinth and carrying it to the banks from where the water weeds are evacuated with the help of tractors.
