Coal India decides to set up 16 washeries, 4 in Odisha

State-run Coal India Ltd (CIL) has decided to set up 16 washeries in its various subsidiaries to improve coal quality out of which four will be located in Odisha

The company will set up the washeries with 92 million tonnes per annum capacity in four coal producing states of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal, an official statement issued on Tuesday said.

Of the 16 washeries, four would be set up in Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL), Odisha, six in Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Jharkhand , three in Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Jharkhand, two in South Eastern Coalfields Limited SECL and one in Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) West Bengal.

Four washeries in Odisha’s share will come up at Basundhara, Jagannath, Hingula and Ib valley each having a per annum capacity of 10 million tonnes.

The washeries will reduce the quantity of ash and other irrelevant components from coal and make it as competitive as imported coal, the statement said.

Presently, CIL already has 17 coal washeries of a capacity of 39.40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in operation, the statement said. (with PTI inputs)
