Odisha hikes compensation for deaths due to wild animal attack

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to increase the compensation amount in the cases of death due to wild animal attack from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh, said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today.

Speaking on the occasion of state level Wildlife Week celebrations at Jaydev Bhawan here, Patnaik said it has also been decided to provide compensation for sheep and goat killed by wild animals. While Rs 2,000 will be paid for every sheep or goat killed, Rs 750 will be paid for every lamb killed.

“My government is committed to ensure better livelihoods for the people staying in remote villages of the protected areas and has brought out guidelines during June 2016 for extending relocation packages to these villages as well. A payment of Rs 10 lakh is made to each family. The infrastructural needs of these villages are also being taken up,” the CM said.

He also presented Biju Patnaik Award for Wildlife Conservation for the year 2016-17 to Chakradhar Hembram of Mayurbhanj for his outstanding contribution in the field of Wildlife Conservation. Hembram was given Rs 2 lakh cash, citation and a shawl.
