Cong lost opposition status in Odisha: LoP Narasingha Mishra

Bhubaneswar: With the number of Congress legislators declined to 14 after disqualification of MLA Jogesh Singh, the party lost opposition status in Odisha Assembly, said Leader of Opposition (LoP) Narasingha Mishra here today.

A political party needs one tenth of the total seats of the House strength to become the main opposition party in Assembly. According to rule, Congress needs 15 elected MLAs to be the opposition party in the House. Now, the number reduced to 14 following disqualification of Congress MLA Jogesh Singh, Mishra said.

Under such situation, the state government will take final decision about Leader of Opposition (LoP) post, he further said.

The statement came a day after the Orissa High Court disqualified Jogesh Singh as the MLA on petitions filed by BJP candidate Sahadev Xaxa and a voter Ajay Patel. They alleged that Singh had submitted a fake caste certificate claiming himself that he belongs to ‘Bhuyan’ tribe.
