Bhubaneswar, Sep 22:

The Congress on Sunday formed a high level committee to review the party’s miserable performance in the recently concluded elections to urban local bodies and also to identify dissidents who put up rebel candidates and worked against the party. The panel will submit its report within 15 days, sources in the state PCC said.

Sundargarh MP and formeer chief minister Hemananda Biswal will head the panel while party MLA Prasad Harichandan will be its convener. Other members of the panel are Sarat Rout and former MP RK Nayak.

“We have specific allegations against some people from the party who helped independent candidates win the civic polls. I have formed a team of senior leaders who will give a report within 15 days after visiting NACs and talking to voters and party activists”., PCC presdient Jaydev Jena said.

However, it is not clear if  the panel would also look at the role of the party leadership and whether it had contributed to the party’s dismal show at the hustings.

A senior Congress leader told OST that the PCC president’s move is nothing short of a witch hunting exercise designed to target his adversaries within the party and not to seek the real reasons behind the party debacle. ” If a serious and honest review is done  Jena himself would be in the line of fire”. the veteran party leader said.
