Congress to adopt ‘one family, one ticket’ policy in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Aiming to stay away from dynasty politics and giving more emphasis on the winnability factor, the Congress today announced “one family, one ticket” policy for selection of candidates in Odisha for 2019 General and Assembly Elections.

AICC Odisha in-charge Jitender Singh said the party will not consider any recommendations while selecting candidates apart from merit.

“We have decided not to entertain any recommendation while selecting candidates for the upcoming general and state assembly elections,” Singh told reporters at Congress Bhawan here this afternoon.

He further added, “Winnability factor or merit is the sole criteria for choosing candidates. The party will not give tickets to brothers, sons and any relatives of contesting leaders.”

The AICC leader also informed that the part’s screening committee will finalize the list of candidates within a few days after having a discussion with the top leaders from the State.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) President Niranjan Patnaik, who had earlier said that candidates’ merit is the only criteria for selection, echoed Singh, saying AICC’s decision will be the final.

Earlier, Patnaik had announced that the Congress will select at least 50 candidates including some new faces by end of August.
