Control room to deal with water logging issues during monsoon in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: After heavy rain lashed Odisha capital, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to open a 24-hour control room to deal with the water logging issues during monsoon in the city.

The control room will be functional from today till September 23 for quick solution to water logging issues. It will also provide all sorts of assistance to locals during the rain and post-rainfall.

The control room, which will be managed by BMC’s drainage division, will comprise of eight engineers. They will be engaged on rotation basis. This was decided at a meeting held yesterday.

As per the decision made at the meeting, there will be two excavators, two tractors, five water pumps and 10 employees under the control room. Total 20 pumps will be deployed in various zones of BMC to release water.

Besides, the fire department has been asked to deploy water pump to tackle major situation in the city.

As the MeT has predicted heavy rainfall between July 15 and 19, the BMC has prepared strategy to deal with the situation. The sewerage cleaning work has been launched since yesterday by deploying employees in several locations. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) cell officers have been directed to visit 20 wards from today and submit status report on sewerage cleaning and others.

Apart from it, zero tolerance initiative will be taken to make the prime sewerages encroachment free which is creating hurdles to release water.

The BMC has decided to write to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to draw its attention to take initiative for quick solution to release water from flyovers in Baramunda.

The BMC and BDA’s senior officials have been asked to visit different wards and take appropriate steps to release rain water and to improve drainage system in the city.

Further, the temporary transit station will be kept open for 24-hours near Sainik School following which number of vehicles can be deployed to remove garbage. Order has been placed to remove the garbage from the sewerage areas during the monsoon.
